Reading List: Books on the development of science from the 1700s to today

I gave a 2.5-hour e-lecture yesterday, on the character and development of science from the 1700s to today. It wasn’t a conventional history of science just going from discovery to discovery, but had a focus on how science proceeds in conjunction with the humanities, with society, and with cultural norms. The following are books that I made reference to or recommended during the lecture. Since it was a lecture for first-year students, all of them are easily readable, no academic books here.
